Listen in to Kathy Kaler talking Yiddish Song on Chai Fm

March 25, 2018

Chai Fm's Kathy Kaler spoke to Philip Todres about the musical documentary, Leah, Teddy & the Mandolin, on her show 'Morning Mayhem'.  That was on Friday 16 March, before the doccie's Johannesburg premiere on Sunday 18th at the Rabbi Cyril Harris Community Centre. (Read about the premiere here)

Kathy Kaler is responsible for establishing the first global Jewish talk radio station, 101.9 Chai FM, which took to the air in Johannesburg in 2008. She is both a radio presenter and the radio station's CEO. Philip Todres is Co-Director with documentary film maker, Heather Blumenthal, of Leah. Teddy & the Mandolin - Cape Town Embraces Yiddish Song.

You can listen to that interview on Chai FM by clicking on the podcast here and scroll down to 2018,03.16 Philip Todres

Kathy had selected some wonderful Yiddish songs to play on the show, like the Andrew Sisters doing Ba Mir Bistu Sheyn and Chiribim, Chiribom as well as  Benzin by Max Perlman.  These songs can also be heard in the documentary - and Philip insists, totally 'objectively', that these are much better versions!

Thanks to Kathy Kaler and the Chai FM team for this chance to talk about Yiddish song and its powerful universal appeal.
