Focus on Yiddish at the Gitlin Library

January 29, 2018

The Gitlin Library featured some of their selection of books, CD’s and DVD’s that focus on Yiddish.  This was to tie in with the premiere of ‘Leah, Teddy & the Mandolin’.

What a delightful surprise to discover a children’s book with a Yiddishe tam (Yiddish flavour).

Nosh, Schlep, Schluff - BabYiddish by Laurel Snyder is beautifully illustrated by Tiphanie Berks.  How’s this for adding to your child’s Yiddish vocabulary:

And if you feel
cranky, stretchy
bear in mind …

you’re just KVETCHY.

There’s the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Learning Yiddish by Rabbi Benjamin Blech.

But do you know that the CJSA runs Yiddish classes at all their branches?  And once a year in August, there’s the 3 day Ot Azey Yiddish course - referred to as a Yiddishe mikvah.  For the 3 days you are immersed in Yiddishkeit - language, food, song and entertainment.  For instance, you don’t just have a tea break, but you do a Yiddish tea drinking ceremony. Serious edu-tainment! (Contact CJSA - T +27 21 434 9691)

But back to books and other wonderful material in the extensive Gitlin collection.  Want to find out more?  Then simply click onto their user-friendly website and you’ll be amazed at what is available. Better still visit and be impressed by the informed and welcoming professionals and volunteers who will certainly be able to help you.

The Gitlin Library is at the Gardens Community Centre, Hatfield Street, Gardens, Cape Town  and their telephone number is 21 462 5088.
